Based on MedBen’s block of business, surgical admissions saw a 23.9% decrease during the 2019-20 period, followed by a decline in medical admissions (-13.3%). Less affected by the pandemic were maternity (-4.8%), mental health (-2.1%), and substance abuse (-1.5%) admissions.

These findings are in line with a new national analysis that predicts hospital admissions will likely be down 10.5% this year. In April, admissions fell to 68.6% of typical activity, as non-emergency treatments were postponed or canceled. Admissions have slowly risen since then.
