Recent updated guidance from the American Optometric Association recommends annual eye exams for all adults 18 and older in order to detect vision problems as soon as possible.

“Comprehensive eye exams provide the opportunity for early detection of eye health and visual performance problems, as well as the prevention of vision loss,” said AOA President Dr. Ronald Benner said in a statement. He added that eye and vision disorders are “linked to decreased quality of life,” physical and mental challenges, which have “broad implication for the entire health care system.”

With VisionPlus, employers can offer vision coverage that promotes the importance of annual eye exams and early detection and treatment of visual impairments. You can put together a vision package that meets employees’ eye care needs while respecting your budget.

By examining blood vessels in the eyes, optometrists can detect early signs of chronic conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. And, early detection is key for good prognosis and lower incurred costs to a health plan.
