Five years after the pandemic, MedBen clients have seen a general decline in telehealth visits by plan members to their family doctors, dropping 45% from its peak. Currently, only about five percent of members are still using telehealth.
One exception to this trend is mental health care. While telehealth visits for depression and anxiety disorders have deceased by over 25%, the proportion of mental health visits has risen steadily each year (see chart). In 2024, 20% of all mental health care was provided remotely.
The continued use of telehealth for mental health matters isn’t surprising. For many individuals, these conditions carry a stigma and seeking therapy can feel embarrassing. Telehealth offers the appeal of a more private and less intimidating environment.
You can review telehealth use for your own plan by accessing MedBen Analytics and downloading a Utilization Metric report. If you have questions, contact your Account Management team.
