New research underscores the importance of having a trusted primary care physician – not only for day-to-day health, but also for long-term care. As cancer treatments advance, more patients are living longer, with 22.5 million survivors projected by 2032. But the transition from specialty care back to primary care can be challenging without a consistent physician relationship.
MedBen WellLiving has long emphasized establishing and maintaining a relationship with a family doctor as essential to better health outcomes. A consistent primary care relationship not only improves coordination of care but also makes it easier to monitor chronic conditions and encourage preventive exams and tests… including recommended cancer screenings.
“Previous research indicates that involving primary care clinicians (PCCs) during and after cancer treatment can support the patient’s overall, comprehensive health,” said study author Jane McElroy of the University of Missouri School of Medicine. “In this study, we found patients did not always have a consistent PCC.” In fact, only a third of patients consistently saw the same physician, creating gaps in follow-up care.
When members make their family doctor the “medical home” for care, they gain a trusted advocate who understands their history, provides continuity, and helps navigate specialty treatment when needed.
